Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar was named “Texan of the Year” by the New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Legislative Conference on Monday for his outstanding service to the state, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to becoming comptroller, Hegar was a state senator that served the Texas Senate’s 18th district in Katy. The award was presented by Patrick Rose from the New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce via Zoom.
While many men and women served Texas exceptionally the past year, Rose said, Hegar stood out among his peers. “The criteria for this honoree is as follows: any living man or woman who’s performed an outstanding service or services in the field of public affairs for the benefit of the state of Texas,” Rose explained.

As the state’s chief financial officer, much of the burden of keeping the state financially solvent fell to Hegar.
As comptroller, Hegar has his finger on the economic pulse of our state,” Rose said. “In the midst of the challenges associated with COVID-19, he is proactively working to position Texas well in recovery, which will amplify our state’s economic success in the months and years to come.”
While the Texas economy entered into a recession, Hegar said, the state’s solid financial status entering the pandemic enabled it to weather the crisis. “Texas entered into this with a firmer foundation than so many other states and so many other nations,” Hegar said. “It’s really the hard work of so many men and women that just drive the Texas economy and make it what it is.”
Hegar believes Texas will bounce back from the financial strain of the pandemic. “We learned so many lessons from this pandemic, I firmly believe that Texas is on the right trajectory,” Hegar said. “We just need to continue to make sure that we invest in… our infrastructure and our people, and the Texas economy will continue to move forward.”
Prior recipients of the Texan of the Year Award include former presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, former Governor Rick Perry, Senator John Cornyn and George Strait, Rose said.
